How the score works

Each measure scores 0–10 on a straight line between a “0 points” and a “10 points” value, set for the company's industry (from its SEC industry code): a 20% gross margin is poor for a software company and normal for a retailer. Pillars average their measures, then the pillars are weighted into the overall score. Banks and insurers are scored on measures that suit them. The thresholds and weights are judgement calls and haven't been back-tested against share-price returns.

Growth 20%, profitability 25%, balance sheet 15%, dilution 10%, valuation 20%, momentum 10%. Grades: A 8+, B 6.5+, C 5+, D 3.5+, F below.
